What Does 10x Wagering Mean? Worked Bonus Examples

Calculate the requirement, separate cash from bonus funds, and check contribution, expiry and stake restrictions.

Gambling Commission guidance

10x means ten times the stated qualifying amount

A £20 bonus subject to 10x wagering means £200 of qualifying wagering, if the terms apply the multiplier to that £20 bonus. It does not mean depositing £200, winning £200 or making a £200 profit. The amount wagered counts stakes placed under the qualifying rules, which can be funded by a balance that rises or falls during play.

The Gambling Commission's bonus wagering cap took effect on 19 January 2026 for operators within its framework. Ten times is a maximum requirement, not a guarantee that every offer has wagering or that every offer is good value. This guide's figures are invented arithmetic examples, not live promotions. They explain obligations for adults deciding whether to accept a bonus; they are not a plan for making money from gambling.

Two simple examples without assumed winnings

Start with the bonus amount and the multiplier, then write down their product before considering a game. For a hypothetical £10 bonus at 10x, the requirement is £100. For a hypothetical £20 bonus at 10x, it is £200. If a tracker shows £35 of qualifying wagering completed against the £100 requirement, the remaining requirement is £65.

£2010x£200
£205x£100

None of those rows estimates what will remain in the account afterwards. A player might exhaust the available bonus balance before completing a requirement. A displayed £200 target is therefore not a promise that the bonus can be converted to withdrawable cash by following a certain number of spins. Reading the requirement is a condition check, not a forecast.

What is the multiplier applied to?

The label 10x is incomplete without its calculation base. Read whether the stated requirement applies to the awarded bonus, eligible free-spin winnings or another specifically defined promotional amount. Do not quietly add your deposit to the base because a historic overseas explanation used deposit-plus-bonus wording. The applicable Great Britain conditions and the offer's actual terms need to agree.

Keep your own deposit balance separate in your reasoning. The Commission's withdrawal guidance distinguishes deposit money from bonus funds and does not allow bonus wagering requirements to become a general lock on withdrawing a deposit balance, subject to necessary regulatory obligations. If an account shows £30 cash and £10 bonus, the presence of the bonus alone is not an explanation for treating all £40 as restricted bonus money. Ask which balance is affected before accepting a support explanation.

Game contribution changes the qualifying total

Contribution describes how much of an eligible stake counts towards the requirement. In an illustrative offer where an eligible game's stakes contribute 100%, a £2 stake adds £2 to the qualifying total. If a different permitted game contributes 20%, the same £2 adds only 40p. These are invented contribution rates used to explain the calculation, not assertions about a named operator.

At a constant 20% contribution, £100 of actual stakes adds £20 to the tracker. The difference explains why a progress bar can move less than expected. It does not justify increasing stakes, extending a session or choosing a more volatile game. Check the game's exact title against the eligible list. A excluded title and a low-contribution title are different: the former may add nothing or breach terms, while the latter may count only partly.

If the tracker disagrees, save the offer terms, game-round references and starting and ending tracker amounts. Those records let support inspect a calculation instead of relying on a recollection that a particular session felt long.

Expiry is a condition, not a reason to rush

A bonus deadline answers a different question from the multiplier. A hypothetical £100 requirement expiring after seven days still requires the stated eligible wagering; the deadline does not reduce it. Establish whether the clock begins at acceptance, award or another expressly named event, and whether the stated time uses a particular time zone.

Write a complete example as '£10 bonus, £100 qualifying wagering, deadline Sunday 18:00', rather than '10x within a week'. The first description can be compared with the terms; the second loses two useful details. If the deadline would require gambling more often or spending beyond a planned budget, decline the bonus. Ask what happens to unused promotional funds on expiry. Do not assume that a bonus expiring also removes money that belongs in a separate deposit balance.

Maximum-stake terms are not the multiplier

A promotional maximum stake is a separate rule to inspect. In an illustrative bonus with a £2 maximum eligible stake, a £3 wager is not made acceptable because only £2 of it should count. The actual terms and the system's controls determine how a prohibited wager is handled. Our example is a warning about an incomplete reading of conditions, not a recommendation to place a £2 stake.

Keep promotional restrictions distinct from statutory slot stake limits and your own account limits. Three different caps can apply to the same activity for different reasons. A game's permitted stake does not automatically satisfy a promotion's conditions, and a promotion's conditions do not override legal restrictions. For the wider framework, use our licensed-casino rules guide. An offer that requires spending above a personal budget is unsuitable even when its written multiplier complies with the cap.

A pre-acceptance worksheet

Fill in six fields before opting in: the eligible bonus amount, multiplier, qualifying games and contribution, expiry event and time, maximum eligible stake, and effect of declining or cancelling the bonus. A blank field is a question for the operator, not permission to substitute the most favourable interpretation.

  1. Copy the offer and full conditions with a date.
  2. Calculate amount times multiplier on paper.
  3. Check whether the intended game is expressly eligible.
  4. Identify the cash and bonus balances separately.
  5. Ask about cancellation and any missing terms before accepting.
  6. Decline if the conditions conflict with the time or money already budgeted.

For example, a £20 bonus at 10x is not fully understood if the page never states whether free-spin winnings have separate conditions. A support answer such as 'standard wagering applies' still leaves the base undefined. Request the precise term rather than continuing to gamble while expecting the interpretation to be settled later.

When the displayed requirement looks wrong

If a current Great Britain offer appears to demand more than ten times the relevant bonus, preserve the wording and ask the licensed operator to explain its calculation. A screenshot alone may omit an offer's base, contribution rules or separate reward, so include the complete terms and the transaction reference. Do not present a suspected breach as proven before those details have been checked.

Use the formal complaints procedure for an unresolved dispute and keep the first complaint date. Our withdrawal and complaint guide explains the evidence and ADR route. Reviewed on 13 October 2026, this article uses the Commission's current implementation date and original hypothetical arithmetic. No brand is recommended and no outcome is promised. The most useful result of the worksheet may be deciding that the offer adds conditions you do not want.

FAQs

What does 10x wagering mean on a £20 bonus?

If the multiplier applies to the £20 bonus, it means £200 of qualifying wagering. That is the sum of eligible stakes after any stated contribution rules, not £200 of deposits or winnings. The available balance can run out before the requirement is met, and completing it does not guarantee a profit.

Does 10x wagering apply to my deposit?

Do not assume your deposit is part of the calculation. Identify the offer's precise bonus base and keep deposit money separate from promotional funds. Commission guidance does not permit bonus wagering to become a general withdrawal requirement on your deposit balance, although necessary regulatory checks can still apply.

Why does my wagering tracker increase slowly?

Check game eligibility and contribution before assuming an error. In our hypothetical 20% contribution example, a £2 eligible stake adds 40p to the tracker. Your actual terms may differ. Save game-round references and tracker values if the stated contribution and recorded progress do not agree.

Are all UK casino bonuses now 10x?

No. The Commission's cap effective from 19 January 2026 is a maximum, not a requirement that every promotion uses ten times. Some offers may use a lower multiplier or have no wagering requirement. Expiry, eligibility and other conditions still need reading, and the Commission regulates Great Britain rather than every overseas promotion.
